Project: Hidden Cottage
- Land Masons Design & Build
An overgrown garden, nestled amidst the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, was ripe for transformation. Land Masons were entrusted to breathe new life into this expansive space, creating a sense of order and beauty while respecting the property's historic charm.
Mindful to make every penny count, we focused on fulfilling our client's key desires: creating a well-defined central pathway, generous planting, a captivating water feature, inviting spaces for entertaining, and replacing the outdated shed with a sleek, modern alternative.
Our design balances minimal formality with cottage charm, creating a garden that is both beautiful and practical.
The garden lacked structure and definition.
— BEFORE WE BEGAN THE TRANSFORMATION
Space to Connect
What was once an unloved space is now a generous area for socialising. As they mature, the newly planted trees will cast dappled shade over the dining table and large stone benches, creating a welcoming spot for gatherings.
The modern shed, with its black-wood finish, offers a rugged and striking storage solution that blends seamlessly into the background.
Fragrant planting beds soften the lines of the hard landscaping and frame the permeable pathways. An unattractive oil tank is now discreetly hidden behind hazel screens and hornbeam hedging.
Space to Reflect
A large, formal wildlife pond extends from the drystone walls, cutting through the central pathway into a secluded area framed by newly planted hornbeam hedges. As these mature, they will be clipped and shaped, to create a sense of enclosure and privacy. This tranquil spot offers a perfect space for contemplation on a strategically placed bench beside the water.
The pond is flanked by carefully considered planting areas that contribute to the overall beauty of the scene. A simple yet modern wooden bridge spans the water, maintaining the direct path through the garden – a practical touch for those with green fingers and a wheelbarrow to manoeuvre.
Space to Unwind
Conveniently located midway into the garden, a short stroll from the kitchen, we arrive at the limestone patio. Sun-drenched beneath the silver birch trees, relax on the contemporary Hay chairs, surrounded by colourful blooms and lush foliage.
Opposite the patio, a circular pool edged in limestone pavers provides a tranquil focal point. A water lily graces its surface, adding a touch of natural beauty. From this vantage point, the owners can enjoy lovely views of the surrounding landscape while basking in the sunshine.
Space to Grow
This end of the garden, nearest the house, is a more traditional cottage affair with rustic stone paths through an expanse of planting.
The U-shaped raised bed, crafted from durable cedar with handsome chamfered detailing, provides ample space for cultivating herbs and kitchen garden plants while allowing easy access to all sides.
Surrounding the raised bed, a newly planted mixed native hedge will eventually form a lush living screen. This softens the visual impact of the wooden structure, making the planting the focus of this less formal area.
