Project: Poppy Cottage
- Old Patio Becomes Elegant Driveway
Land Masons were approached by a customer keen to maximise their offroad parking and improve the curb appeal of their charming old farmhouse. Sensitive to the rustic character of the setting, we carefully chose appropriate materials and complimentary features.
The solution was to excavate and transform a tired old patio into a tasteful and elegant cobbled driveway. Traditional stone walls, complete with rounded copings and an inviting curved front, border the area with an additional paved access ramp.
We first carefully dismantled the original patio and walling, salvaging any reusable stones. Next, we excavated the driveway's footprint and poured foundations for the retaining walls. Land drains and weep holes, surrounded by free-draining stone, were integrated into the blockwork ensuring water wouldn’t compromise the structure.
The wall was faced with reclaimed stone and filled with concrete for extra strength. To provide a sturdy foundation, a six-inch steel-reinforced concrete pad was poured for the driveway, topped with elegant cobbles. The access ramp was paved with buff limestone flagstones, and a short wall was constructed in front of the entrance to support the grand oak porch.
The result is a tasteful and elegant transformation, maximising parking space and curb appeal.
